I need some suckers volunteers to help me test out a newer version of the Oppo userscript. Afraid to give a stranger control of your computer? No? Read on!

"WAIT WAIT WAIT! I don't like reading." No problem - skip ahead to the tl;dr .

What's new? I'm starting up a new version of the Oppo user script, codenamed Oppo-X (original, I know) that will hopefully (1) perform better, (b) allow me to introduce some fun new stuff, and (IV) not be significantly harder to maintain.

First up on the menu - hosted scripts and css files. These files will be hosted on my personal domain space and allow me to add a lot more to the script, piece by piece, as time allows. Independent lab tests indicate that the css loads up to 110% faster, reducing the eye strain and nausea caused by the Top Stories sidebar. The success of this feature depends on how much bandwidth you guys use and how clever I can get with the web server configuration.

Next up - big screen support. Many of you have asked for support on larger screens where there is a lot of wasted whitespace on either side of the content. This feature will give you super-wide users (er, umm, users with super-wide screens) more bang for your buck. At the same time, I'll be able to fine-tune the experience for everyone else.

Finally - optional features. I would like to allow users to turn on or off certain features. I know some folks don't like the colours I've added with the userscript, so I'd like to allow enabling/disabling sub-features like this.

I need you, intrepid Opponaut, to volunteer for this project and risk everything for the good of your community. Can't wait? Good, here are your instructions:

Visit !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and install the new script

Disable the regular Oppo userscript

Enjoy!

If you have any trouble, write it on a postcard and send it to Santa Claus.

tl;dr - A new version of the Oppo userscript is being worked on, but don't worry, you won't miss anything important. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! will stay great and up-to-date with all necessary changes.

There's no deadline, no rush. It's an ongoing project.

Looks great!

What are you using for userscripts? Is there an actively-developed plugin for Safari, 'cause I couldn't find it.

Not that I know of. I just put it in by enabling the developer menu and selecting web inspector tools, then pasting the code in. Its only temp as I have to put the code in each time I reload the page. but I didn't feel like firing up Chrome.

OK, I was wondering... with Chrome you can install the Tampermonkey plugin, in Firefox there is Greasemonkey. These allow you to install the code and it'll run automatically every time.

Just a note from what I've seen so far. The headers under top stories on the left side of the page are all really small. Considerably smaller than what they are on the current version.

Uh, yep! That's the point. A lot of people (myself included) found the Top Stories too intrusive. Are they too small on your screen?

I think so.
